During the 19th century heavy industries flourished in Pyrmont, and society developed on three pillars: Trade unions, Churches and the Labor Party.  As the old industries wound down or moved away in the late 20th century, the population declined and the pillars crumbled.  The new Pyrmont Society is forming on very different bases.
