Illustrated Sydney News in 1889 (25 July) recalled

One of the old Pyrmont landmarks is Convincing Hill… St. Bartholomew’s Church stands on the top of this hill. Half a century ago, or less, Convincing Hill was the chosen resort for persons who had little differences of opinion to settle…in the good old English fashion-with the fists. Indeed, at one time people went over from Sydney regularly to ‘have it out’ and usually selected Sunday!

In the more respectable 1890s Referee magazine reported boxing and wrestling in The New Hall, or Hughie Napier’s Pyrmont Hall (Referee, 1 March and 3 May 1899) although these venues soon disappeared.

Elder’s Hall gymnasium in Union Square also hosted boxing bouts (Australian Star, 11 November 1903).
